Family Systems Course Offered in Portland
PORTLAND, OR (August 5, 2004) - As part of its distance-learning program
called North Park West, North Park Theological Seminary is offering a
course called "Family Systems and Ministry" that focuses on acquiring
the necessary skills to effectively minister to parents of youth.
The course will be offered September 17-18 at Portland First Covenant
Church in Portland, Oregon. Classes will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
both days.
"Family Systems and Ministry" is designed to help strengthen the skills
of youth pastors, Christian education directors, counselors, school
teachers, youth workers, chaplains and others who are interested in
helping parents connect with their youth. It serves as an introduction
to the structures, dynamics and challenges of families and their
implications for ministry, focusing attention on the Christian formation
of families, family systems, family development, families in various
cultures and traits of healthy family life.
The course is taught by Steve Burger, director of children and family
ministries for the Department of Christian Formation of the Evangelical
Covenant Church. Burger has served in this position for the past five
years. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and Bethel
Theological Seminary. His wife, Marti, serves with him as the director
of youth and family ministry.
