North Park Athletes Complete Busy Weekend
CHICAGO, IL (September 13, 2004) - Grace Conrad finished third individually
for the North Park University (NPU) women's cross country team, which
placed second in team results Saturday at the 2004 Ted Hedstrand Cross
Country Invitational at Legion Park.
Conrad ran five kilometers in a time of 19:04, just behind individual
champ Melinda Sprague of Illinois Wesleyan University. Sprague was
clocked in 18:59 to edge teammate Megan Byrne's 19:01 effort for first
as the Titans won team honors in the five-team meet
with 20 points. North Park had 46 team points while Trinity Christian
College was third with 72 points.
Allison Weller also made it into the top 10 individually for NPU,
placing sixth in a time of 20:21. Becky Gritter was 11th in 21:16,
Rebecca Dawson was 14th in 21:31 and Kari Thompson was 15th in 21:32 for
coach Emma Sandberg's squad.
In the men's race, Erik Shearer placed 18th overall to lead NPU to a
fifth-place finish in the team standings. Shearer ran eight kilometers
in 32:08. Teammates Luke Johnson and Marcus Simmons were 28th and 29th
respectively.
In other North Park sports action last weekend:
- Mike Haehn threw scoring passes of 56 and 36 yards to Jon Harris and
Sherman Gant had a scoring run of 60 yards for the Vikings in a 40-20
nonleague loss at the
University of Chicago Saturday. Haehn threw for 224 yards and Harris
caught four passes for 129 yards. Ted Decatur had two sacks defensively
for coach Robin Cooper's team, which hosts Eureka College in a 1 p.m.
Saturday nonleague game at Holmgren Athletic Complex.
- The volleyball team beat Illinois College 31-29, 30-26, 14-30,
22-30, 17-15 during the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational
Saturday and finished 1-3 for the weekend. On Tuesday, coach Susan
Zimmer's team plays a 7 p.m. home match against Moody Bible Institute.
- In men's soccer last weekend, the Vikings dropped a 1-0 decision to
St. John's of Minnesota on Saturday and edged the University of Dubuque
2-1 in overtime on Sunday to move to 3-1 this fall. Coach John Born's
team plays a 7 p.m. match at Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday.
- The women's soccer team lost 3-1 to the University of Dubuque on
Sunday to fall to 0-3-2. Katie Rose of Mat-Su Covenant Church in
Wasilla, Alaska, had the lone goal for the Vikings. Coach Bob Usselman's
team plays a 4 p.m. home College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin
match against Wheaton College on Wednesday.
