Women Vikings Edge Marian College
CHICAGO, IL (November 29, 2004) - Shandrel Young scored 13 points and the
North Park University (NPU) women's basketball team moved to 3-1 overall
with a 53-52
nonleague victory over visiting Marian College of Wisconsin Saturday
afternoon at the North Park Gymnasium.
Lauren Martin scored 11 points off the bench and Megan Slattery added 10
points for coach Jack Surridge's squad, which plays Monday night at 7
p.m. at Rockford College. The team competes Thursday and Friday at the
Concordia University Classic in nearby River Forest.
Slattery and Young made baskets in the opening moments of Saturday's
game and North Park never trailed from then on. Cassie Christensen
scored at the 10:22 mark of the opening half to give the Vikings a 17-6
lead and the home team ended the first half with a 24-19 margin.
After Marian College's Chelsea Borgrud hit a jumper with 13:05 left to
cut North Park's lead to 30-28, Martin hit a pair of 3-point buckets
during a 9-0 run as the Vikings led 39-28 with 11:16 remaining. Marian
(0-4) got within a point, 50-49, before Martin hit a 3-point shot to ice
the game.
Young led her team with seven rebounds while Martin and Mount had four
steals apiece for Surridge's team. Borgrud had 15 points and Wilson had
13 for the visitors.
The Vikings had beaten host Milwaukee School of Engineering 64-41 last
Tuesday behind Young's 17 points. Tiffany Campbell added 12 points,
Mount had 10 points and eight assists and Slattery had a game-high 13
rebounds to go with seven points.
Things weren't as successful last weekend for the NPU men's team, which
lost 72-64 at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sunday after
being edged 74-59 by visiting St. Norbert College of Wisconsin on
Saturday. The defeats dropped NPU to 1-4 overall.
In the Edgewood loss, Je'Shawn Stevenson produced 16 points and Cory
Wilks added 11 points as the Vikings nearly erased a 17-point deficit in
the second half. Matt Lindahl of Grace Covenant Church in Iron River,
Michigan, helped the comeback with five points in 15 minutes of action.
But 24 points apiece by Edgewood's Seth Cooper and Charlie Averkamp was
too much to overcome.
Against St. Norbert, Brett Mathisen had 13 points and eight rebounds
(seven on the offensive end) while Lamar Townsend had 12 points, three
assists and three steals. Coach Paul Brenegan's team had dropped a 76-73
decision at Concordia University of Wisconsin last Tuesday despite 21
points by Townsend.
On 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, North Park travels to Elgin to play at Judson College.
