Women Vikings Win Cougar Classic
RIVER FOREST, IL (December 6, 2004) - Freshman Meghan Hunstock of Bethlehem
Covenant Church in Minneapolis totaled 17 points as the North Park
University (NPU) women's
basketball team won the Concordia University Cougar Classic with a 78-48
win over Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Friday night.
Hunstock made 8 of 10 field goal attempts and scored seven of her points
in the opening
4:36 of the contest as the Vikings took an early 12-2 advantage en route
to its second win in two nights. Coach Jack Surridge's team is now 5-2
heading into its Christmas break - they don't play again until December
29 at Benedictine University.
Reserve center Cassie Christensen scored eight points in 16 minutes and
had six rebounds to tie Laura Mount for team honors. Mount added five
points and four assists and Lauren Martin and Megan Slattery had 13 and
12 points respectively for NPU, which led 36-19 at halftime and went on
a 13-3 spurt early in the second half to put the game away. Angie Brown
led IIT (5-6) with 15 points.
Last Thursday, NPU had edged the tourney host, Concordia, 56-54 in
overtime behind 19 points and 12 rebounds by Slattery and 14 points and
10 rebounds by Shandrel Young. Hunstock had sent the game into overtime,
47-47, by hitting a foul shot with five seconds left in regulation play.
The Vikings then went on a 6-0 run to erase a 52-49 deficit in the extra
session as Slattery hit a pair of field goals and Mount added two free
throws. After a Slattery free throw put NPU up 56-54, Concordia had a
turnover and missed a shot as the Cougars attempted to
tie the game again.
In St. Louis, the NPU men's basketball team split a pair of nonleague
games, losing at Webster University 60-55 on Saturday after beating
Westminster College 58-49 on Friday. The Viking men are now 3-5 and
won't play again until hosting Benedictine in a 7:30 p.m. contest on
December 18.
Lamar Townsend scored 13 points and Brett Mathisen had 12 points to pace
coach Paul Brenegan's team in the Westminster win. They had 12 points
apiece and Je'Shawn Stevenson pitched in with 11 points in the Webster loss.
