Saturday Memorial Service for Eunice Gustafson

DULUTH, MN (March 9, 2005) - A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday for Eunice Olive Johnson Gustafson, 79, who died today in Duluth. Her husband, Raymond, was an ordained Evangelical Covenant Church minister who died in 1964 at age 36.

The service will begin at 2 p.m. in Salem Covenant Church, 339 North 59th Avenue West in Duluth. Visitation will be observed from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Jarvi-Dowd Bell Brothers Funeral Home, 925 East 4th Street in Duluth. Burial will be at Oneota Cemetery.

Eunice Gustafson She was born in Duluth on July 6, 1925, to Axel and Olive Johnson. She grew up in West Duluth and Kenwood, graduating from Duluth Central High School and the Duluth Teachers' College. She taught first grade in Iron Mountain, Michigan, for several years.

Eunice married Raymond Gustafson on June 16, 1951. They had two sons, Keith and Byron. Ray and Eunice served churches in Barrett, Minnesota; Brainerd, Minnesota (1952-56); Biwabik, Minnesota (1956-63); and Liverpool, New York (1963-64). Following Ray's death, Eunice moved back to Duluth where she worked at the Bethel Home for unwed mothers for 10 years and later worked as a home care provider.

In August 1977, Eunice moved to Sparta, North Carolina, to be near her brother and sister and their families. She lived there 10 years and served as secretary for the Sparta Presbyterian Church. She returned to Duluth in 1987, living in Faith Haven in West Duluth for 15 years and Edgewood Vista in Hermantown for two years.

She was a member of Salem Covenant Church and was active there as a teacher, leader and friend. She kept up with family and many friends by telephone, letter, email and conversation. Her mind and love were active to the end, one friend notes. "She has loved many people and been much loved by many. She read much, followed the news, and pondered events in the world, peoples' lives and her Christian faith."

She is survived by two sons, Keith of Karawa, Congo, and Byron of New York; three grandsons, Darrell, Trevor and Eric; one sister, Crystal Anderson of Troutdale, Virginia; as well as several in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family requests that memorial gifts be designated for textbooks for Congo schools and sent to the Paul Carlson Partnership, 5101 N. Francisco Ave., Chicago, IL, 60625. Peace to her memory.
