Jorge Julian Perez to Speak on What God Is Doing in Colombia
SACRAMENTO, CA (April 13, 2005) - Rev. Jorge Julian Perez, the president of
the Colombian Covenant Church, will spend several months visiting
Covenanters in the Unites States as part of World Mission's Leader in
Residence program. Perez, who arrived in early April, will be hosted by
First (Sacramento) Covenant Church.
During his visit, Perez will share with congregations what God is doing
in Colombia and help them consider how they might better reach into
their communities.
"I'm excited about the churches having Rev. Perez on hand to share what
God is doing in Colombia," said David Stockamp, coordinator of church
relations for World Mission. "There are some really exciting things
going on like drug rehabilitation ministries, holistic development and
education."
Despite the many difficulties in Colombia, with the violence from the
drug trade commonplace, the Covenant Church there has remained faithful
in ministry. There are now 31 local churches with more than 3,600
members, according to world mission statistics.
"God is working through believers in Colombia to restore the lost and
bring hope to the hopeless," Stockcamp said, adding that he feels that
leaders like Perez "are actually short- term missionaries to the United
States. They minister on such a dynamic level that really touches the
people."
Perez will be in the Sacramento area until June 18 and will attend The
FEAST and the Covenant Annual Meeting. He will also attend the Pacific
Southwest Conference's annual meeting at the end of April.
While First Covenant serves as the host, there are a number of
opportunities for northern California churches to invite Perez to
minister among them. Several churches already have requested Sunday
service ministry, and there are still Sunday and midweek slots
available. To extend an invitation, contact Nelly Bothi at the Pacific
Southwest Conference atnelli.bothi@pswc.orgor (925) 677-2140.
There have been five participants in the Leaders in Residence program,
all of whom were from the Congo: Rev. Duale Langba, Rev. Nubea Kafi,
Rev. Fohle Lyngunda, Rev. Ngendema Moselu and President Luyada Gbuda.
