Easter Procession Highlights Newsletter Activities

CHICAGO, IL (May 11, 2005) - Joe Reed and Kevin Pike of Christ Community Church in Allegan, Michigan, helped bear the cross during the Good Friday Procession of the Cross. A local television station provided coverage of the event.

Several people from Christ Community started the procession 11 years ago. The event has grown to include seven area pastors and Christians representing more than a dozen churches.

Many Evangelical Covenant Church congregations have been busy with mission, service and creative projects as reflected in the more than 250 local church newsletters reviewed each month by the Department of Communication. Following are some of those activities, grouped by conference and region.

CENTRAL

  • Crest Hill, Illinois: An old-fashioned gospel concert featuring the male quartet Higher Ground was held recently at Church of the Good Shepherd Evangelical Covenant Church.
  • Iron River, Michigan: Men of Grace of Grace Covenant Church recently performed at the Iron County Medical Care Facility.
  • Wilmette, Illinois: The Vasa Brass Band of Gothenburg, Sweden, performed at Winnetka Covenant Church. The band is an ecumenical group of 30 musicians, many of whom attend Bethlehem Covenant Church in Gothenburg.

EAST COAST

  • Riverside, Rhode Island: The Evangelical Covenant Church has begun working with the denominational program Natural Church Development to increase church vitality. John Wright flew to Africa to help Samaritan's Purse with two projects in Sudan.
  • Boston, Massachusetts: Covenant Congregational Church hosted a men's retreat called "Crossing Jabbok." Covenant minister Doug Wysockey-Johnson, executive director of Faith at Work, led the retreat.
  • West Peabody, Massachusetts: The Rainforest Reptile Show was presented at Community Covenant Church. The event featured an education program with living reptiles, amphibians and arthropods from around the world.

GREAT LAKES

  • Livonia, Michigan: Trinity Covenant Church hosted two lectures entitled "How Tolerant is God?" and "The Call for Tolerance and the Community of Shalom." Daniel Taylor, a professor literature and writing at Bethel College, Minnesota, presented the lectures.

NORTH PACIFIC

  • Olympia, Washington: River Ridge Covenant Church presented a concert featuring the nationally known singer/songwriter Sara Groves.
  • Lake Bay, Washington: Jim Ptak took the members of Lake Bay Community Covenant Church on a journey through the history of Christian sacred music composed by the leading composers of their time. Different styles of music from Gregorian Chant to Baroque until modern times was presented.
  • Mount Vernon, Washington: Bethany hosted two events. Evergreen State, a southern gospel quartet, performed. Later in the month, David Shelton, who is a singer, actor, mime and storyteller, performed.

NORTHWEST

  • Red Wing, Minnesota: First Covenant Church hosted the Spring Get-together for women in the district. The theme was Advancing God's Kingdom through Women. The main speaker was Linda Anderson, who spoke about her Sankofa Journey.
  • Minneapolis, Minnesota: Bethlehem Covenant Church welcomed a Palestinian Christian who was raised in the Middle East, and one of its members was honored for his football work. Guest speaker Dominique Jannar spoke about his experience in the Middle East and gave his perspective on current events to a Sunday school class. Member Bill Hunstock was inducted into the Minor League Football News Hall of Fame as a coach of the Minnesota Maulers.
  • Bloomington, Minnesota: The Bloomington Covenant Church adult choir presented an evening of music by British composer, John Rutter.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST

  • Los Altos, California: Bob and Carol Fish, former members of Foothill Covenant Church, gave a presentation to the congregation about their work with Missionary Aviation Fellowship.
  • Redwood City, California: Kevin Swanson, the president of Mission Aviation Fellowship, spoke to members of Peninsula Covenant Church.

SOUTHEAST

  • Greensboro, North Carolina: Trinity Covenant Church celebrated held its mission conference. Missionaries Donna Larson, Judy Wilder and Anna Li met with children during the Sunday school hour. David Baer with Overseas Council preached at both services.
