Newsletters Reflects Covenant Youth Activities
CHICAGO, IL (May 16, 2005) - Trinity Covenant Church, of Salem, Oregon, was
treated to an evening of music by its Young Artists in their first
annual concert, and junior high students at the church participated in
an interfaith service.
Members of the Young Artists group are Christopher Clark, organ;
Marshall Cuffe, piano; Brandon Shaw, bass violin; Steven McVey, violin;
and Staci Wood, viola.
Junior high students helped serve at the interfaith hospitality evening.
Participating were Clarissa Weber, Evelynn Moz, Jessica Schutt, Wade
Young, Bekah Chin, Andrew Upchurch, Jon Latham, Matthew Filipenko, David
Peterson, Allie Haydon, and Lane Porth.
Young people in many Evangelical Covenant Church congregations have been
busy with mission, service and creative projects as reflected in the
more than 250 local church newsletters reviewed each month by the
Department of Communication. Following are some of those activities,
grouped by conference and region.
CENTRAL
- Moline, Illinois: The youth group of Elim Covenant Church traveled
to Chicago and spent a week helping inner city ministries. Youth who
participated in the trip were Kirsten Reynolds, Dennis Lopes, Allie
Armetta, Andrea Jacobi, Loren Carey, Mikey Thayer, Doug Yoeckel, Jimmy
Puckett, Ben Jacobi and Carrie Lynne Lloyd. The church also held a
Trivia Night contest in which 77 members participated.
- Galesburg, Illinois, Two teenagers from the Covenant Church helped
lead "The Weekend: A Journey with Christ," which formerly was known as
"Chrysalis." Robert Waight was a speaker and Peter Neubert was a table
leader. The weekend is an ecumenical event that helps teenagers
experience the grace of God. The church's youth group also heard Gianna
Jensen give her testimony.
- Belvidere, Illinois: Young men from the Evangelical Covenant Church
won first place in the Awana Games. Team members were Rick Nellis, Gino
Hartman, Isaiah Bartley, Tim Kindberg, Sean Doser, Ryan Lindahl, Jake
Mackeban, Brandon Simmons, Bryce Havens, and Daniel Adams. The team was
coached by Mark Shewmon and Kevin Lindahl.
EAST COAST
- Attleboro, Massachusetts: The children of Attleboro Covenant Church
presented the musical "The Rock Slinger and His Greatest Hit."
- South Plainfield, New Jersey: Teenagers from Pilgrim Covenant Church
participated in the 30 Hour Famine. Participating were Jessica Adams,
Christian Johansen, Debbie Johansen, Taylor Kurrilew, Ian McGregor,
Danielle Pasquale, Sarah Schulte, Chris Schulte, and Jeff Wassen.
GREAT LAKES
- Allegan, Michigan: The youth group of Christ Community Church
participated in the 30 Hour Famine. The group helped with a building
project during part of the event.
Hudson, Ohio: Mark Evans, the area director of Young Life spoke to the
men's ministry at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Hudson.
- Jamestown, New York: First Covenant Church hosted a concert and art
exhibit to benefit Christian Radio for Russia. Steve Swanson and John
Cross sang music that was inspired by the art of Oksana Johnson.
NORTH PACIFIC
- Olympia, Washington: Elena Ritter, who was adopted from Romania and
became interested in missions while on a youth trip with Grace Community
Covenant Church, has been chosen to be a member of The Continental
Singers. Ritter had to audition for the group which travels around the
world to share the gospel using drama, singing and dancing.
NORTHWEST
- Minneapolis, Minnesota: Christian Stokes, an eighth grader who
attends Bethlehem Covenant Church, was promoted to the high school
varsity team. He wrestled in the 135-pound weight class for the team,
which took fourth in the state tournament. He is a student at Minnehaha
Academy. Five high school students from Bethlehem Covenant Church
participated in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine.
- Minneapolis, Minnesota: Bethany Covenant Church participated in
World Vision's 30 Hour Famine at the Bethlehem Covenant Church. Jim
Sundholm, director of Covenant World Relief, shared information on the
Sudan. More than 30 letters were written to their national Congressmen
urging them to support legislation that helps reduce hunger and poverty
in the United States.
- Minneapolis, Minnesota: Four high school students from Bethany
Covenant Church participated in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine at the
Bethlehem Covenant Church. Jim Sundholm, director of Covenant World
Relief, shared information on the Sudan. More than 30 letters were
written to their national Congressmen urging them to support legislation
that helps reduce hunger and poverty in the United States.
- Rochester, Minnesota: The youth choir of Rochester Covenant church
presented its final program for the year.
PACIFIC SOUTHWEST
- San Andreas, California: The junior high students of San Andreas
Covenant Church hosted Joey Steelman, a weightlifter and member of the
Radical Reality Power Team based in Stockton, California.
- El Cajon, California: The visual arts team of Community Covenant
Church held its second annual creative art exhibit. Church members of
all ages contributed their original art. "The Creative Spirit" was the
event's theme.
- Concord, California: Boy Scout Troop 363, which is hosted by Concord
Covenant Church, held a bicycle derby that include safety lessons as
well as a wheelie competition, the bike balance beam, and trick riders.
- Hilmar, California: The youth choir presented "Kids Praise! 7" as
they sang hymns written by famous composers throughout church history.
