Weekend Event Focuses on Need to Combat Hunger
WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 3, 2005) - More than 40 members of the Evangelical
Covenant Church (ECC) will represent the denomination at a four-day
national event Saturday through Tuesday that is designed to heighten
awareness of the need to combat hunger in the United States.
"One Table, Many Voices" is co-sponsored by Bread for the World, a
nationwide Christian citizen's movement seeking justice for the world's
hungry, and Call to Renewal, a national network of Christian churches,
faith-based organizations and individuals working to overcome poverty in
America. The event is being held at American University.
Speakers at the conference include ECC President Glenn R. Palmberg and
North Park University student Tim King. Other Covenant attendees include
Curt Peterson, executive minister of the Department of World Mission, as
well as representatives of Covenant World Relief.
The conference combines Bread for the World's bi-annual National
Gathering and Call to Renewal's annual Pentecost Mobilization. The event
will include information and training on critical issues in reducing
poverty and hunger in the United States and around the world.
While in Washington, participants will receive updates on hunger
policies, learn how to better mobilize against hunger, lobby members of
Congress and participate in an interfaith service at the National
Cathedral.
Other speakers and workshop leaders include David Beckmann, president of
Bread for the World; Ray Suarez, senior correspondent of the News
Hour with Jim Lehrer, and Dan Haseltine, lead singer for Jars of Clay.
