Malawi Students to Assist Summer Camp Programs

REDWOOD CITY, CA (June 6, 2005) - Four young people from the African nation of Malawi will arrive Saturday to help Peninsula Covenant Church with its summer camp programs.

Missions Pastor Sid Newcomb says he met the students from Africa Bible College in 2001 while he traveled with a basketball team in the country. The church has helped fund their expenses in the years since.

The students, who will be in the country for 10 weeks, will assist with tennis and day camps as well as soccer clinics. "That adds a super cool dimension for church during the summer," says Newcomb. "These kinds of projects open the eyes of people to other cultures."

Newcomb says two students have returned to Malawi to help start sports ministries in their countries. Members from the church also helped start the ministries in Malawi. The African interns will be joined by 17 other interns from the United States.
