Elim Golfers Win Big in Covenant Tournament
MOLINE, IL (June 14, 2005) - For the second year in a row, Elim Covenant
Church of Moline captured the trophy in the Western Illinois District
Covenant Church Golf Open on Monday.
Members of four churches participated in the tournament, held at the
Golfmohr Golf Course in Hampton, Illinois. In addition to Elim, First
Covenant Church of Moline, Galesburg Covenant Church, and Princeton
Covenant Church all participated.
First Covenant took second place, followed by Galesburg and Princeton.
Places were determined by combining the five lowest scored of each team,
says Don Johnson, of Elim, which hosted the tournament. Churches take
turns hosting each year.
Johnson says Elim overwhelmed the others with sheer numbers of
participants, with 23 of the 44 participants coming from the
congregation. Of course they also had the talent, he adds. Last year was
the first time in more than nine years that Galesburg had not won the
tournament.
Johnson says there were two rules: "The first rule was have fun, and the
second was to obey the first rule."
The traveling trophy will again be displayed in a case at the church,
Johnson says. Awards also were given in separate competitions such as
longest drive and the ball closest to the pin. A meal followed the
tournament.
