Covenanter Makes Major League Debut with Pirates
By Craig Pinley
WASHINGTON, DC (June 29, 2005) - Nate McLouth of the Evangelical Covenant
Church of Whitehall, Michigan, fulfilled a dream yesterday, making his
major league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who lost 2-1 to the
Washington Nationals.
McLouth, a 23-year-old outfielder, was promoted from Class AAA
Indianapolis to take the roster spot of pitcher Oliver Perez, who was
placed on the disabled list because of a broken toe.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates chose him
because they wanted to have an extra bench player until Saturday, which
was when Perez was to make his next start. On that day, they will recall
a pitcher from Indianapolis and, almost certainly, send McLouth back.
He was not complaining.
"It's great to be here," he said in the Post-Gazette report. "I
just want to make a good impression and do the things I was doing in
Indianapolis. I'm sure I'll be a little in awe at first, but I'll do
what I know I can do."
In 74 games for Indianapolis, McLouth was hitting .306 with 12 doubles,
5 home runs, 32 RBIs and a team-high 23 stolen bases. In 2004, McLouth
was one of the top hitters for the Class AA Altoona (PA) Curve, helping
his team make it to the championship round before losing in the finals.
He had been an All-State baseball player in high school before being
signed by the Pirates, eventually earning All-Star status for the Class
A Lynchburgh (VA) Hillcats two seasons ago.
