New Book Explores Why Jesus Had To Die

CHICAGO, IL (July 11, 2005) - The seemingly simple yet profound questions of a 10-year-old boy on a field trip inspired his teacher to write the newly published book, "I Wonder Why He Had To Die?"

Covenanter Nancy Stevens had taken her fourth-grade class on a field trip to a California historic mission in 1998, when a student named Tommy spotted a crucifix on display and asked, "Who is that?" Another child answered him that the figure was of Jesus. Tommy replied, "Why did he have to die like that?" I Wonder Why He Had to Die

"I was somewhat shocked that a 10-year-old, middle class American kid didn't know who Jesus was," says Stevens. "But when I thought about it, I realized that less than a fourth of my students went to any church at all."

Tommy's question lay in the back of her mind until December 2003, Stevens says. With the world engaged in vigorous discussion about The Passion of the Christ, she says, God woke her from sleep and reminded her of the event.

"That night I believed God brought the experience back to me because Tommy's question needed to be answered," she says.

Although Stevens initially intended to answer a child's questions, she believes many adults have the same questions but are afraid to ask them. Her book tells the story of salvation history from the time of creation through Jesus's instructions to Peter to share the gospel.

Like Tommy's question, Steven's writing style is simple and yet profound. The opening chapter begins with an imaginative discussion among the Trinity as creation is brought into existence.

Each chapter is brief - most are only two pages - and includes several questions that can be answered as part of an individual study, family devotions, confirmation class, or adult Bible studies. "While my intent was to answer Tommy's question in language that he could understand, I also realize that many adults are intimidated by books on theology," she says.

Stevens is a frequent speaker at retreats, which she sometimes leads with her husband, Doug, and attends Hope Center Covenant Church in Pleasant Hill, California.
