CHICAGO, IL (July 25, 2005) - Jason Burley, son of Rev. Jerome and Joanne
Nelson, is reported in stable but critical condition after being stabbed
numerous times in the chest and abdomen Saturday night behind his
parents' apartment.
Nelson is superintendent of the Central Conference of the Evangelical
Covenant Church. Burley's mother, Joanne, works in the Department of
Church Growth and Evangelism.
The 35-year-old Burley was severely injured in the attack that occurred
shortly after 10 p.m. He remains hospitalized at Illinois Masonic
Medical Center.
Amir Kando, 34, has been arrested in connection with aggravated battery
with a weapon, according to a spokesperson with the Chicago Police
Department. Kando reportedly lives downstairs in the same building in
which the Nelsons reside. No motive for the attack has been made public.
Bond for Kando was set at $275,000 during a hearing this afternoon. He
will appear in court July 29 at which time a preliminary hearing date
will be set and charges officially filed, according to a spokesperson
for the State Attorney's office. Kando was charged with battery twice in
1998, according to Cook County Circuit Court records. Disposition of
those cases was not immediately available.
