Typhoon Hits Taiwan, Missionaries Safe

TAIPEI, TAIWAN (September 2, 2005) - Covenant missionaries Don and Lillian Dwight are safe following a typhoon that struck the island Thursday, reports David Dolan, coordinator for Chinese ministries for the Department of World Mission of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

The Dwights report an uprooted tree and a loss of power that already has been restored. "We have five or six typhoons each year there," Dolan says. "They're pretty well set for them." Typhoons are the same as hurricanes, Dolan notes.

News services report two people dead and 24 injured as a result of Typhoon Talim. Train services were suspended across the nation and several airports were closed. As many as 1.5 million people temporarily were without power.
