Relief Housing Registration Form Now Available

CHICAGO, IL (September 8, 2005) - Numerous offers have been received at Evangelical Covenant Church offices from concerned people offering housing for families and individuals displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Without question, the needs for housing will be great, especially as families are able to personally visit their former neighborhoods and see for themselves the total destruction, realizing they may never be able to return to their former homes.

"A highly emotional and stressful time" is how Jim Sundholm describes the situation facing hundreds of thousands of families as they ponder their next moves, reluctantly accepting the harsh reality that life never will be the same for them and they may have to move on. "That is something that each person has to work through at their own pace," says Sundholm, who directs the Covenant World Relief response to the hurricane disaster.

Although it may take time for the families to make those decisions, "we need to move ahead and put in place the mechanisms that will allow us to match those families with housing offered by caring people," Sundholm says. With that in mind, a special Covenant registry has been set up to accept offers of housing so they can be organized and pursued as the families decide they are ready to move on.

Those interested in offering housing may visit this special link, Housing, to complete and submit the form. That information will be used by Covenant World Relief to match displaced people with available housing, possibly working at times with other relief agencies that are partnering with Covenant World Relief in coordinating responses. Offers of housing are not binding - the actual decision can be made once a need has been identified and the potential housing donor notified.

Contributions continue to pour into Covenant World Relief offices. Those interested in donating to the Covenant Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund administered by Covenant World Relief may do so in two ways:

  • Checks made payable to Covenant World Relief and earmarked for hurricane relief may be sent to Covenant World Relief, 5101 N. Francisco Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60625.
  • Donations also may be made online using a major credit card at Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. All online gifts will receive a charitable acknowledgement by mail for tax purposes.
