Concert Proceeds to Support Hurricane Victims
THIEF RIVER FALLS, MN (September 12, 2005) - A benefit concert this coming
Sunday evening at the Evangelical Covenant Church will raise funds to
support relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature area vocalist Laurel
Johnson, who will sing to piano accompaniment while also using her
talents as an interpreter for the deaf to sign her music using
background tracks. "The music will reflect God's loving care and
comfort," says Johnson, who will be joined in the performance by other
gifted church musicians.
"You've seen the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in newspapers
and on television," reads a news release promoting the concert. "Perhaps
you've wondered how you can help - living in Northern Minnesota, as far
north as the Gulf Coast is south." The release goes on to quote Jim
Sundholm, director of Covenant World Relief, who in an online Covenant
news story noted that "though it feels a bit impersonal, there is no
question but that the biggest concern is dollars. Money can be easily
transferred or even carried into needy areas - it grants the most
flexibility in delivering relief to the people." Monetary contributions
to the hurricane relief effort remain the fastest and most effective
means of support at this point in time.
The church is located at 1425 East Third Street (Highway 59) in Thief
River Falls. A free will offering will be taken, with all of the
proceeds going to relief efforts that are already in place and for
ongoing relief work. Refreshments will be served following the concert.
