Scholarship Recipients Now Serve as Counselors

By Stan Friedman

LAKE GENEVA, WI (September 17, 2005) - Like many counselors, Antwan Williams and Tiffany Miller began attending church camp as children, but the two were able to have the experience that changed their lives because of a special scholarship program.

The two from Gary, Indiana, benefited from the Golf for Kids scholarship when they first began attending Covenant Harbor Bible Camp and Retreat Center in 1997. This year, Williams was a counselor for his third consecutive year, and Miller served for the first time (see accompanying photo).

Antwan Williams and Tiffany Miller For the past 12 years, Covenant Harbor's Annual Golf for Kids has been raising money to help children-at-risk who might not otherwise be able to attend camp. This year, the benefit tournament will be held September 30 at Hawks View Golf Club in Lake Geneva. Darrell Griffin, pastor at Oakdale Covenant Church, is the honorary chair and guest speaker this year.

Organizers hope to raise $24,000, says Jim Steere, the camp's director of development. Already, the tournament has attracted a record 128 golfers. Because golfer fees cover the cost of the tournament, 100 percent of the sponsorship funds go directly to the children. People unable to attend can support the event with a $250 family or individual sponsorship, Steere says. Course, green and hole sponsorships also are available.

The counselors say the scholarships have been foundational for their lives. "One counselor in particular, Kim Klockars, made a big difference and impression on me," says Miller, who has long desired to give back to campers as a counselor what she received. "She said, 'Follow your heart, follow your dreams.' She brought so much joy to my heart, and God allowed it all to work out."

"Being on staff has taught me a lot," says Williams. "I listen to my campers and their struggles call me to a higher standard. They are looking up to me as a role model."

Steere says he looks forward to the scholarships continuing to benefit people like Williams, who is now studying architectural technology, and Miller, who is studying culinary baking and pastry arts.
