Camp Escapes Damage from Continual Rains
KEENE, NH (October 14, 2005) - Pilgrim Pines Conference Center and Monadnock
Covenant Church have escaped damage from rains that have poured almost
continuously since last week, causing the worst flooding the area has
seen in more than 20 years.
"The camp is fine," says executive director Dave Cairns. "There's
minimal damage to the roads leading to the camp."
Garth McGrath, pastor of the church, was not available for comment, but
Cairns says he believes only one congregation member had minor flooding.
The flooding has forced more than 1,200 people from their homes.
Last Sunday the church helped feed many of those forced from their homes
that sought shelter in the Keene Recreational Center. The congregation
initially had baked goods to be sold at a local quilting show, which had
to be canceled because of the rains and the need to provide shelter.
Church members then donated the items to the evacuees.
Cairns expressed appreciation for the calls and emails he has received
from around the country to check on the status of the camp. "I've
probably received 100 calls and emails."
