One Shot Makes the Difference in Loss to Macalester
RIVER FOREST, IL (November 15, 2005) - At the end of the game, the shot tally
was Macalester 15, North Park 14, but one shot was all it took to end
the season-long reign of the North Park University men's soccer team.
The Vikings fell to Macalester College 1-0 in the first round of the
NCAA Regional Tournament at Dominican University Saturday.
In one of the most statistically even matches the Vikings have played
this season, the difference came with a corner kick by Macalester's Alex
Whitworth. Whitworth scored 33 minutes into the game with the help of
teammates Carson Goerecki and Eddie Powers after a confusing melee that
found NPU goalie Austin Person in a rare position away from the net,
after he blocked a first attempt. The goal was the first scored against
North Park in the last four games.
The Vikings made a definitive offensive effort, taking 10 shots after
the Macalester goal. North Park made several drives to the goal in the
second half. At the 60th minute, PJ Eriksson headed a corner kick from
Gabe Vogler that was just wide. Four minutes later, Elvis Fikic's
attempt was blocked and Kyle Fisher's shot off of the rebound hit the
crossbar.
More than 300 students made the trip to support the team. In a
bittersweet moment, the team took the opportunity to applaud their
supporters at the game's conclusion.
North Park matched up with Macalester in corner kicks with 4, fouls at
13 and 14, and goal keeper saves at 2.
