Thanksgiving: Time to be Thankful and Thoughtful
By Don Meyer
CHICAGO, IL (November 24, 2005) - Thanksgiving for many is a time to remember
God's goodness, to reflect on the many blessings we enjoy, and to
express our love and affection to others who have blessed our lives.
Sometimes it is difficult to feel thankful, especially when so many
people continue to suffer around the world, helpless victims caught up
in acts of violence sparked by deep-rooted hatred and evil or those
devastated by acts of nature. Why does it have to be so? How is it that
some enjoy lives of relative luxury while others struggle just to survive?
Some today will sit at tables generously graced by bountiful supplies of
food. Others will wonder where to find the next meal – just enough food
to keep themselves and their children alive to greet the dawn of tomorrow.
Such stark contrasts are difficult to comprehend. Where is God in all of
this, some may ask? The good news is that God remains firmly in control,
but it is helpful to be reminded on a special day like today that it is
to each one of us that God has entrusted the care for this creation and
the people who inhabit it.
So, may we find moments throughout the day to remember those less
fortunate for whom today is just another day, another struggle just to
keep going. And, may those thoughts move us to action – to personally
engage in the effort to improve their lives and honor that which he has
entrusted to us.
