Swedish Musical Tells Story of Immigration

MOLINE, IL (June 23, 2006) - The Bjurtjarn Theatre Group from Varmland, Sweden, will present the musical They Sold their Homes at 7 p.m. Tuesday at First Covenant Church.

Covenanters in Chicago also can see the musical at 5 p.m. Saturday at North Park University during its Swedish Midsummer Festival, and at the American Swedish Institute on July 5 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The story is based on a song written by Swedish immigrant Johan Erik Lindquist that details the harrowing journey of his and 200 other Swedes’ harrowing journey to the United States. Lindquist died shortly after he arrived in Moline in 1854.

The theatre group was founded in 1993 to tell stories about its home province of Varmland.

Admission to the Moline event is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. The proceeds will benefit the Moline Swedish Friendship Association cultural exchange scholarships between Moline and Sweden.

The North Park event is free, but an offering will be taken.
