Readers Share Their ThoughtsBy Don MeyerCHICAGO, IL (August 8, 2006) - Hardly a week goes by that we do not receive a few comments from readers on stories published as part of the Covenant online news report. We will share from time to time some of those responses generated through the “comments” link attached to each published story. This kind of feedback is very helpful to our Covenant News Service staff as we seek to identify and publish stories of great interest to a broad spectrum of online readers of this report. Following are comments relating to recently published stories, edited in some cases for length. To read a particular story of interest, click on the headline. Chaplain's Tour of Duty in Iraq Extended Stan Summers of Anchorage, AK, writes: It is good to know that God is at work through the chaplains in the midst of war. Thank you for these stories that remind us we need to keep our military personnel in our prayers. The Gauers are active in the Anchorage Covenant Church and we thank God for their testimony, both here and in Iraq. Ken Soper of Caledonia, MI, writes: As a former Chapel Management Specialist (USAF-Vietnam Era), I can attest to the great ministry chaplains have with their comrades. Our congregation, Thornapple Covenant in Grand Rapids, has a member serving in Iraq as a chaplain - Don Smith. We have a small group of men who have been praying for him weekly for protection and witness. Thank you for sharing your story, John. Cape Cod Church to Offer U2 Eucharist Linda Forbes of Chicago, IL, writes: Leave it to Kathy to get this thing going! Hurray. She and I both love U2. How exciting. I hope there will be more coverage (with pictures) of this event . . . perhaps more of us will consider doing something like this. New Look for Enhanced Covenant Website Karen Stein of Walnut Creek, CA, writes: I love the look of the new website. The only problem I have is that the labels in the line under the Evangelical Covenant Church and the drop down menus that flow underneath them do not fit inside the lines. I am using Apple's Safari browser, so sometimes things look a little different than they do on Internet Explorer. Linda Forbes of Chicago, IL, writes: Absolutely love the new look! Love the daily scripture, too. My only comment would be that when I went to the resource page and then to pensions, the print was very small. The same is true of the drop-down menus, but I suppose there you don't have much room to play with. Is there any way to make the font larger on this and other pages? Church Celebrates 100 Years of Ministry Polly Olson of New Hope, MN, writes: My grandparents, my husband’s grandparents, and my great uncle were all charter members of Lake Union Covenant Church. I stayed home from teaching in China (for a 15th time) to be at the 100th reunion. I am glad I did. From that tiny church, started by poor immigrant farmers, many of us have a deep heritage to reflect upon. At least 14 members of our family, descendents of those five charter members, were at the reunion. God doesn't have any grandchildren, only children, but many of us are children of God because those early pioneers were great teachers of the faith. I was so impressed that those 46 current members of Lake Union put on such a large, well-planned and successful 100th reunion. The work of the Lord goes on! CHIC Youth End Up with Quite a ‘Deal’ Maynard and Alice Erickson of Oakland, NE, write: Yea! We are so happy for our youth and their love for Jesus. Also for the dollars for the mission trip. CHIC News Stories Retained in News Archive Yolanda Lay of Chicago, IL, writes: I just want to say thank you because this was the first time my daughter went to CHIC with our church, New Jerusalem Life Covenant Church (Rev. Lawrence Pointer, pastor). She is still talking about it and the spiritual experience she had. She really enjoyed herself. Thank you all! God bless your ministry! CHIC: Jesus Was No Ordinary Teacher George Brown of Roseville, MN, writes: Interesting. I was under the impression Christ Jesus of Nazareth "knew no sin." According to Mr. Campolo, this is not the case. Christ is a sinner like all of us past, present and future? Who will save us now? Last I knew, Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father and intercedes for those that have been touched by the Holy Spirit he promised to send. Even if Mr. Campolo is using Matt. 25:31-46 as his example, he's putting it a bit out of context, which so many modern day evangelicals do. And this? "Tonight, Jesus is going to die for our sins," Campolo said, but explained that this time it would not be on a cross. He would die on the concrete floor of a shack because the mother was too impoverished to care for him. This is another gospel - NOT what the apostles preached for sure. What happened to "Where is it written?” Speakers Announced for Campus Theme Program John R. Hunt of Wilmette, IL, writes: This looks like an outstanding series! I like the way North Park is relating the Christian faith to the liberal arts. Are any of these events open to alumni, donors, Covenant church members or the public? Harbor, Enabling Residences Offer Camping Experience Kim Herrera of South Elgin, IL, writes: Love that Covenant Harbor is doing this special camp. I have a 16-year-old daughter with Down Syndrome and if you ever do a camp for special needs kids, PLEASE let me know. 'Walk and Pray' Leads Group to Gang-Controlled Park Valerie Rivas Martinez of Fresno, CA, writes: I have known Katie Brooks since we worked together in Watts and East Los Angeles 20 years ago. Her heart for children, especially children of poverty, is still the same. Promise Park and its community are blessed to have Katie in their midst for she is a living embodiment of the love of God. God bless you all! Bishop Benjamin F. Reid Dead Sylvia V. Reid of Los Angeles, CA, writes: My name is Sylvia V. Reid and I am the daughter of the late Bishop Benjamin F. Reid. If Gwendolyn Jones or others are still interested in or need information regarding my father, they may contact me at reidcasa (at) aol.com.
