Companion Article Focus of Sunday Online ‘Skypecast’

CHICAGO, IL (August 23, 2006) - Professor Scot McKnight’s article about the emerging movement (EM) in the February issue of The Covenant Companion will be the primary resource for an online Skypecast discussion at 8 p.m. (CDT) on Sunday.

Skypecasts, which are akin to conference calls, are among the latest uses of new technology that allows person-to-person voice communication over the Internet. Skype is computer software that allows users to call other people using their computers. The software is free and downloadable by visiting Skype.

The Sunday evening Skypecast will address how the EM relates – or doesn’t - to Asian-Americans. The EM often is viewed as primarily a concern of young Caucasians.

McKnight is the Karl A. Olsson professor of religious studies at North Park University and is recognized as a leading commentator on the EM. McKnight said he had been unaware of the upcoming Skypecast.

In his Companion article “Future or Fad,” McKnight writes, “From the outset, the EM has been a conversation rather than a ‘movement’ or a ‘church’ or a ‘denomination.’ Theological statements are easily turned into monuments and statues, and the EM wants even its theology to be conversational. The EM is a dialogue between Scripture, tradition, and culture, and it asks the Holy Spirit to carry the day so that what is affirmed is both scriptural and relevant.”

Now the conversation is taking place in even new ways.
