Memorial Service Saturday for Retired Pastor Carl Lugn

BATAVIA, IL (August 31, 2006) - A memorial service for retired pastor Carl Gustav Emil Lugn will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Covenant Church.

Lugn, 89, died Wednesday following an extended illness. The family will conduct a private graveside service at West Batavia Cemetery.

Born April 16, 1917, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Lugn married Helen Nelson in 1942 in Norway, Michigan. She survives him.

Lugn graduated from North Park Junior College in 1939 and from North Park Theological Seminary in 1943. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1945 from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. He also attended Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut.

Ordained in 1946, Lugn served several Covenant churches: First Mission in Jamestown, New York; Evangelical Covenant Church in Marquette, Kansas; Covenant Congregational Church in Hartford, Connecticut; Evangelical Covenant Church in Evanston, Illinois; and Trinity Covenant Church in Livingston, New Jersey. He also served the Protestant Community Church in Ciudad Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, as well as the Union Church in Lake Bluff, Illinois, before retiring in 1983 and moving to The Holmstad. Upon his retirement, he became the first chaplain at The Holmstad and was the visitation pastor for Geneva Methodist Church, serving both for several years.

Survivors also include his children: Kristin Mellish, Bruce Lugn, and David Lugn; eight grandchildren; a grandson; and two sisters, Anna Hayman and Linnea Deacon.

A light lunch will follow the memorial service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Good Samaritan Fund in care of The Holmstad, 700 West Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, IL, 60510, or to Covenant World Relief in care of the Evangelical Covenant Church, 5101 N. Francisco Ave., Chicago, IL, 60625, with the gift designated for Covenant World Relief.
