Manda Island: Where Old and New Meet
MANDA ISLAND, KENYA (September 7, 2006) - There is a beauty and grace
that abounds in areas of Kenya, including fairly remote areas not far
from where five pastors were licensed in August by the Evangelical
Covenant Church of Kenya. Our thanks to Pete Ekstrand for these
captivating glimpses of life on Manda Island. Ekstrand is
regional coordinator for Africa for the Department of World Mission of
the Evangelical Covenant Church.  | It is the village by the sea on Manda Island, a quaint community known for its production of building blocks, among other things.
| | Here, a supply of finished building blocks are available in the market area. |  |  | One will not find diesel end loaders here - the donkey is the main mode of commercial transportation. And a practical means at that, given the narrow streets in the villages with limited room to maneuver.
| As remote as Manda Island may seem, it is difficult to avoid the clash of the ancient culture with the modern age of technology. This is the Manda Island version of the movie theater, complete with stone and mud, thatched roof, and yes, the satellite dish!
|  |  | Looking for a big-screen movie experience in an 18-theater cinema complex? Perhaps in New York, L.A. or Chicago, but not on Manda Island. Note the wood plank bench, supported by building blocks. Popcorn? Forget it!
