Kenya: the Beauty of an Ancient Lifestyle

LAMU ISLAND, KENYA (September 7, 2006) - In August, five pastors were licensed by the Evangelical Covenant Church of Kenya (ECCK) in areas of Kenya that are striking in appearance, not only for their natural beauty, but also because of the ancient lifestyle they reflect.

Typical street scenePete and Cindy Ekstrand serve as regional coordinators for Africa for the Department of World Mission of the Evangelical Covenant Church. This week, Pete Ekstrand shared a number of photos with Covenant News Service that wonderfully capture the ambience of this fairly remote region of the world.

The accompanying photo shows a typical street in Lamu Town on Lamu Island, which is located not far from the Evangelical Covenant Church of Mpeketoni, where three of the five pastors were licensed on Sunday, August 20. To read an earlier story about that special worship service, please see Mpeketoni Service.

Lamu Town is an ancient Arab trading town dating from about the 16th Century, according to Ekstrand, with streets that are so narrow that donkeys are the more effective means of transportation for weaving through the crowded pathways. For a closer look at life in the streets, see Lamu Town.
