Thailand Specialists Not Adversely Affected by Unrest
BANGKOK, THAILAND (September 20, 2006) – Those working in Thailand with economic development programs on behalf of the Evangelical Covenant Church have not been adversely affected by the recent political upheaval involving the ouster of the nation’s prime minister on Tuesday.
Covenant development work in the region has included expanding fish farms and developing crafts businesses to help improve the economic lives of Thai citizens. Although daily routines of the Covenant economic development specialists have not been disrupted, some foreign governments have advised their citizens to stay away from large gatherings and government buildings.
The Thai military has been in control of local television and radio stations since Tuesday, a source tells Covenant News Service. Major news networks like BBC and CNN have been removed from the cable networks, so there has been no live coverage at the present time.
Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratglin, the head of Thailand's army and the newly declared leader, said Wednesday it could take a year to produce a new constitution leading to a fresh general election, according to other news reports.
