Local Church Located in Area of Hazardous Materials FireAPEX, NC (October 6, 2006) – A fire that poured noxious fumes into the air over this community, where Summit Covenant Church is located, caused more than 100 people to be hospitalized, according to news reports. Most of the residents hospitalized were residents of a nursing home, according to CNN reports. At least 10 police officers were ordered to undergo a decontamination process after complaining of nausea and difficulty in breathing. Half of the community’s 32,000 residents were told to evacuate after blasts began at a hazardous materials plant late Thursday night. Telephone calls to several local church leaders went unanswered. The cloud of smoke contained "pesticides, oxides, chlorine gases" and "all grades of contaminated material," news reports said. Rain that began falling on the community was expected to knock down the material. No cause for the blaze has been determined.
