Barbecue Provides Perfect Outreach into the CommunityPADUCAH, KY (October 6, 2006) – The spirit of hospitality for which 4 Rivers Covenant Church has become known was on display again over the weekend, as the congregation played a major role in the community festival that attracted more than 40,000 people. The church made bracelets for children that listed parents’ names and contact information, offered games and videos, and provided shady spots for diners at the Barbecue on the River.“We want to bless families and make it a nice family experience,” pastor Brad Henson told the local newspaper. There were a lot of families to bless, as they came to sample more than 80 tons of barbecued food cooked by more than 50 barbecue teams from Western Kentucky vying for the Grand Champion trophy. 4Rivers spent roughly $5,000 – more than any other sponsor of the event, says Larry Sherman, associate superintendent of the Great Lakes Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church. “The church has an outstanding reputation,” says Sherman of the four-year-old congregation, which also is one of the newest in the denomination. “They are known for the ways they have reached out to their community.”Sherman says the church of roughly 400 has attracted new attendees each year the congregation has participated in the barbecue event. Sherman and Ed Delgado, the Covenant director of evangelism and prayer, received their own special blessing at the event. They were among the judges for the barbecue contest - forced to indulge themselves for a good cause, of course. To learn more about the church, the comm.
