Newly Published Book Honors Prof. John WeborgCHICAGO, IL (October 10, 2006) – A festschrift honoring long-time North Park Theological Seminary (NPTS) Professor John Weborg has been released. In Spirit and in Truth, a collection of essays, was nearly three years in the making, says NPTS Professor Phil Anderson, who co-edited the book with colleague Professor Michelle Clifton-Soderstrom. “It’s significant that there is no particular milestone connected with the festschrift,” says Anderson, explaining that festschrifts normally are published in connection with a retirement or birthday. Organizers “just seized the moment,” he says.Weborg, who has officially retired but continues to teach courses at the seminary, has long been one of the most popular professors with colleagues and students. The once would-be veterinarian taught theology, worship and spiritual formation. Nearly every Evangelical Covenant Church has been at least indirectly affected by his work, Anderson observes. “Without a doubt, he is one of the most influential people in the Covenant,” Anderson adds. The book is divided into three sections: theology, spirituality and worship, and healing and embodiment. “We wanted to include the areas that were of interest to John,” Anderson says. Contributors include colleagues, friends and former students. Weborg’s legendary wide-ranging interests are noted in the festschrift’s foreword by Stephen Graham, the seminary’s dean of faculty. “John is just as likely to quote U2 lead singer Bono as he is the philosopher Heidegger, or poets from Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, or the ancient past,” Graham says. “And he is able to use this remarkable scope of learning with humility and grace.” The book also includes the last essay ever to appear under the name of Weborg’s close friend and fellow professor, Burton Nelson, who died in March 2004. Nelson worked on the content of the piece with Geoffrey Kelly, who finished the essay. In Spirit and in Truth serves an expanded issue of The Covenant Quarterly, which is mailed to all pastors as well as subscribers.
