To Learn About the Homeless, Spend a Night With ThemSACRAMENTO, CA (November 21, 2006) – Greg Carr wanted to entertain and protect the young adults of First Covenant Church who spent Saturday night on the streets of this city to learn more about homelessness.Carr, who is homeless, played his guitar for the roughly 20 people from the church. Then, he said he wanted to sleep with them in front of a warehouse to make sure they remained safe. Members of the church said they wanted to learn more about the causes of homelessness. What they say they discovered is that the stereotypes often are wrong. “We have so many stereotypes,” Josiah Watters, the church’s outreach minister, told the Sacramento Bee, which published a story Monday about the group. “We think these people are alcoholic bums.” “You listen to people - you hear stories,” says 19-year-old Nicole Ferguson. “You realize that you have a lot in common.” Among those the group was surprised to find on the street was a former lawyer whose life fell apart after his wife died. “It’s hard out there,” said church member Nathanial Anisodon, 22.
