Omaha Physician Honored with Education Award
OMAHA, NE (December 14, 2006) – The Nebraska Chapter of the American College of Physicians has awarded Dr. Robert Ecklund, a member of First Covenant Church, with its Dedicated Teacher Award.
“The epitome of a clinician-educator and faculty role model, Bob has shown a zealous, enduring commitment to excellence in medical education,” said Dr. Richard Hranac, governor of the state’s organization.
“Dr. Ecklund has had a tremendous impact on the lives and education of literally thousands of medical students and residents spanning generations of physicians,” Hranac said. “His constant quest for new medical knowledge, his consummate skills as a clinician, and his attention to detail helped Bob become the esteemed teacher he is today.”
Ecklund earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Wheaton College and his medical degree from the University of Illinois. He was the chief of medicine at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Omaha from 1980 to 1997. He also was vice chairman of the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine.
Although he had many duties as a hospital administrator, Ecklund says, “The day-to-day teaching is the best.” Instruction in medical school generally is done one-on-one or in small groups, and Ecklund adds that he especially enjoys the interaction.
His work in the church and denomination also has impacted lives, says Robert Dvorak, interim pastor of First Covenant. “He is a committed member of this church and a devoted scholar of the scriptures.”
Ecklund has served as chairman of the church, taught Sunday school and served on various boards. The longtime Covenanter also served on the North Park University Board of Directors from 1987 to 1992.
His wife, Patricia, has served on the Executive Board of the Midwest Conference.
