Heavy Rain Devastates Congo Community

BUMBA, CONGO (December 18, 2006) - As many as 3,600 people in this city long served by Evangelical Covenant Church missionaries have been left homeless because of heavy rains.

"Some of the victims have sought shelter with close relatives in surrounding villages, but most are still in Bumba and living in canoes," says Charles Longoso, the provincial health inspector who is quoted in a United Nations update. So far one child has died.

Humanitarian agencies already have gathered 16 tons of food and six tons of non-food items, the UN said. The lack of transportation is making delivery difficult, however.

World Health Organization epidemiologist Jean-Robert Likofata said that while he awaited an evaluation of the epidemiological situation, "we expect there will be an increase in waterborne diseases and malaria."
