Power Outages Interrupt Church ServicesMERCER ISLAND, WA (December 18, 2006) – Power outages that resulted from storms on Thursday across the Puget Sound region forced several Evangelical Covenant churches to cancel or alter their services.Crossroads Community Church in Yelm canceled services, says Kris Ann Jarvis, director of North Pacific Conference ministries. Midway Covenant in Des Moines met in the dark without power. Cedarcreek Covenant, which normally meets in a Maple Valley school, moved its service to 1:30 p.m. at Kent Covenant. “The school district would not let any churches meet in their facilities since they had not completed a damage assessment,” says Jarvis. Power at Covenant Shores Retirement Community was restored at 4 p.m. Sunday. Community buildings operated on generators. The conference offices still were without power. High winds knocked out electricity to more than a million customers in the region on Thursday. As of Sunday morning, 300,000 still had no electricity. Conference Superintendent Mark Novak told Jarvis that his home could be without power for several more days. Due to the outages, the conference has extended the discounted registration fee for "The Present Future" conference with Reggie McNeal until December 23.
