Missionaries Safe in Bangkok

BANGKOK, THAILAND (January 3, 2007) – Missionaries of the Evangelical Covenant Church are reported to be safe in this country, whose capital city was rocked by several explosions Sunday.

David Husby, Asia regional coordinator for the Department of World Mission, said missionaries advised him they are safe and not in danger.

The explosions killed three people and injured 36 others, including nine foreigners, according to the Bangkok Post.

The newspaper quotes Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont as blaming unnamed politicians whose power has been eroding. He labeled them "sick in the head."

The newspaper writes that although Surayud did not offer names of suspects, the Council for National Security called in for questioning former Deputy Prime Minister Pol Gen Chidchai Wannasathit; the former prime minister’s Secretary General Prommin Lertsuridej; former National Intelligence Agency Chief Pol Gen Jumpol Manmai; and Pol Lt-Gen Chalor Chuwong, former assistant national police chief.

Ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra denied any involvement in the incidents through his legal adviser, Noppadol Pattama.
