Memorial Service Set for Retired Missionary Leonard Hallock
PORTLAND, OR (February 19, 2007) – A memorial service will be conducted February 27 for retired Evangelical Covenant Church missionary Leonard Hallock, 89, who died Thursday. The 1:30 p.m. service will be at First Covenant Church.
Hallock was born April 10, 1917, in Portland. He married Esther Nelson on October 20, 1938.
 Hallock was an adult counselor at a junior high camp in 1957 when he felt the call to mission work after hearing a missionary speaker at the event. He and Esther were commissioned in 1958.
The couple served twice in the Congo, beginning in 1959. Esther and other missionary women returned home the following June due to unrest as the country achieved independence from Belgium. Leonard returned to Congo in 1961 where his work included teaching French to Congolese children.
They traveled to Congo again in 1981 to help build the hydroelectric dam in Zulu, which still provides electricity to the Karawa hospital and surrounding area. The couple returned again two years later.
Hallock was a guest lecturer in the engineering department at Oregon State University. He also shared with numerous churches his African experiences.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Len Hallock, of Portland; and a daughter, Joan Long, of San Mateo, California; two granddaughters, and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Leonard Hallock Memorial Fund to support Cascade Camp and Conference Center, or to Covenant World Mission. Donations may be sent to the attention of First Covenant Church, 107 NE 45th Avenue, Portland, OR, 97213.
