Memorial Service Planned for Retired Pastor Paul J. Johnson


TURLOCK, CA (March 2, 2007) – A memorial service for retired Evangelical Covenant Church Pastor Paul J. Johnson, 97, will be conducted at 2 p.m. March 9 at Covenant Village. Johnson died Tuesday.

Johnson, a lifelong Covenanter, was born May 15, 1909, in Rockford, Illinois, where his family attended First Covenant Church. He attended North Park College, Sioux Falls (South Dakota) College, and North Park Theological Seminary.

Johnson married Agnes Johnson on August 23, 1939. She preceded him in death.

He celebrated the 60th anniversary of his ordination in 2006, having been ordained in Jamestown, New York, in 1946. He served as pastor of nine Covenant churches on the East Coast and in the Midwest from 1935 to 1974, also serving as interim pastor at four churches from 1974 to 1980.

Johnson was a member of several boards, including the Midwest Conference Ministerial Association, Covenant Cedars Bible Camp in Hordville, Nebraska, and the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg, Nebraska.

Survivors include three sons: Warren Johnson, Vernon Johnson, and Dennis Johnson.
