No Japan Covenant Churches in Area of Earthquake

TOKYO, JAPAN (March 26, 2007) – No Covenant churches are in the area of Japan that was rocked by an earthquake Sunday morning, report David and Ronna Husby, Asia regional coordinators for the Department of World Mission of the Evangelical Covenant church.

The 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Noto peninsula located about 190 miles west of Tokyo, cutting off power and water to thousands of homes while flattening some houses, buckling highways and triggering landslides. Aftershocks continued this morning – some 175 so far, according to a Reuter’s news report – averaging between 4.8 and 5.3 magnitude.

The earthquake Sunday “caused considerable damage, injuries and one person was killed,” the Husbys advise in an email update. “There are no Covenant churches in that area and the Japanese government has been able to care for those affected at this time.”

Officials are warning residents that more aftershocks could occur.
