Safe Return from Congo Tops ‘Most Read’ List

CHICAGO, IL (April 5, 2007) – Readers of the Evangelical Covenant Church online news report closely followed stories about the harrowing ordeal of Curt Peterson and Roger Thorpe in Congo, as evidenced from Covenant website activity reports. The Congo stories were three of the 10 most popular in March.

CongoPeterson, executive minister of Covenant World Mission, and Roger Thorpe, a retired Covenant medical missionary to the African nation, unexpectedly found themselves in grave danger when they were caught up in violence between the military forces of Congo President Joseph Kabila and troops loyal to last fall’s unsuccessful presidential candidate Jean-Pierre Bemba, who was elected to the Senate. The accompanying photo shows Peterson (right) and Thorpe with family members at O’Hare International Airport following their return home.

The closing of Covenant Bible College continued to draw reaction as evidenced by the number of comments in the online Readers Share feature of April 3. Readers in a March 19 Readers Share feature also expressed appreciation for Kurt Miericke, who announced he is stepping down as superintendent of the Southeast Conference, and for Debbie Blue, who is the first nominee to be executive minister of the newly formed Department of Compassion, Mercy and Justice.
