‘Coffee-Brewing’ Iraq Chaplain to Speak Sunday

BROOKLYN PARK, MN (April 13, 2007) – The Covenant’s own Navy Chaplain Lt. John G. Anderson is home from ministering to the troops in Iraq and will be speaking and sharing his experiences in the war zone during both morning worship services this Sunday at Redeemer Covenant Church.

Anderson, an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Church, formerly served as Redeemer’s associate pastor before following God’s lead to become a Navy chaplain.

CoffeeHe will speak during the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services, with a reception for his family following the second service. Redeemer Covenant Church is located at 7801 Brooklyn Boulevard in Brooklyn Park. To access a map and driving directions to the church, see Redeemer Covenant.

“John’s ministry is truly unlike any other,” says Redeemer’s Senior Pastor  Steven P. Larson. “He has been highlighted on the U.S. Defense Department’s news website, featured in U.S.A. Today, and featured on “War Stories with Oliver North.” He also was featured in a 2006 online Covenant News Service article, Chaplain Back by Popular Demand.

The following excerpt is a portion of the larger story posted on the U.S. Department of Defense website.

Anderson drew media attention when he opened a free coffee shop for U.S. Marines and sailors deployed with the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, where Anderson served as battalion chaplain in Camp Habbaniyah, Iraq.

“I wanted a place where they can come for a good cup of coffee and relax,” said Anderson, 38, of Anoka, Minnesota, in an interview for the Defense Department’s website. Coffee is not the only thing dispensed – there was time for spiritual conversation with the chaplain as well.
