Falwell Inspired Christians to Enter Political Arena
CHICAGO, IL (May 15, 2007) – “The Christian Church in this country has lost a leader who may be best remembered for inspiring Christians to become actively engaged in the political  process,” said Glenn R. Palmberg, president of the Evangelical Covenant Church, upon learning of the death of Jerry Falwell around noon today in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The 73-year-old internationally known televangelist was found unconscious late this morning in his office at Liberty University and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital where efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful.
“He reversed a trend among conservative Christians who remained uninvolved in the political arena,” Palmberg noted. “He encouraged those who shared his convictions to express themselves and make their voices heard, a move that ultimately inspired many others who did not share his views to become similarly engaged in shaping public opinion and seeking political change.”
Falwell founded Liberty University in 1971 and in 1979 created the Moral Majority, a conservative political lobbying movement.
“Our prayers are with his family in their time of loss,” Palmberg said.
