Church Responds, Demonstrates ‘Neighborly Love’

EVANSTON, IL (May 22, 2007) – One Covenant church recently responded to a neighborhood tragedy and in the process demonstrated what it means to love your neighbors.

Sojourner Covenant Church offered hospitality to residents of a nearby condominium building who were evacuated when the roof of the structure’s underground garage collapsed about a week ago.

"We pulled out the Sunday refreshments and put on a pot of coffee," pastor Nils Peterson told a local newspaper. "People just needed a place to get collected."

Roughly 55 residents were displaced when the roof collapsed and destroyed the garage’s exit ramps. The incident occurred when a giant beam placed on top of the underground garage fell through the garage's roof all the way to the basement shortly before 9:30 p.m. on a Friday. Only one minor injury was reported.

One resident said, "It felt like a bomb or an earthquake. There were a lot of little tremors after that." To read more, see Building Collapse.
