First Covenant Omaha Celebrates 125 Years of Ministry

OMAHA, NE (May 25, 2007) - First Covenant Church in Omaha, Nebraska, will continue to celebrate its 125th anniversary on June 3, with a special service that will include some of the 22 women and men who were nurtured in the church and have gone on to serve in pastoral ministry or missions.

Ken Carlson, Midwest Conference superintendent and member of First Covenant Church, will preach at the 10 a.m. service. A picnic featuring “old competitions,” such as wheel barrow races and “kick the slipper,” will be held. There will also be some "new" activities, such as giant, fun inflatables for children to enjoy. Historical displays also will be set up, and invited guests will share their stories of being nurtured in the church.

The celebration is part of a series of events that recall the past and look expectantly to the future. Bob Dvorak kicked off the events in November 2006, while serving as interim pastor, with a "Brown Hymnal Sing," and individual ministries of the congregation have hosted special events.

On June 17, First Covenant Church will celebrate the arrival of new senior pastor Wes Gibson, his wife Diane, and their children, Connor and Rachel. An installation worship service will be held at 10 a.m. and followed by a reception.

The year-long celebration will culminate September 8-9. An open house and reception will be held in the afternoon on September 8 prior to a banquet. People interested in attending the banquet should contact Marilyn Hobbs at 402-614-1445 to reserve tickets. Cost is $20, and reservations should be made by September 2.

Glenn Palmberg, president of the Evangelical Covenant Church, will speak following the banquet. The address is free and open to the public. Palmberg also will preach at the Sunday morning worship service on September 9.
