Bare Bookshelves to Help Overseas Pastors

MOUNT VERNON, WA (May 26, 2007) – Members of Bethany Covenant Church are taking books off their shelves at home so that pastors in other countries can have what might even be their first theological and pastoral resources, including Bibles.

The church began collecting the books for its “Operation Bare Your Bookshelf” at the beginning of May. “It’s been going quite well,” says Wilbur Anderson, who chairs the church’s missions committee.

The church is working through Christian Resources International. The organization accepts requests from pastors and church members in need of books and forwards their request to donors.

Many pastors in poorer countries don’t even have Bibles, Anderson says. Pastors that have Bibles often need to share with several others who don’t.

So far, eight pastors have submitted requests. The missions committee will decide in June on who will receive the books, Anderson says. Cost to ship the Bibles is roughly one dollar per pound, Anderson says. The books are sent directly to the pastors.

Extra books that are not needed by the pastors will be given to City Team Ministries in Seattle. That organization will distribute them to recovery programs.
