Grandmothers Connection Thriving in Colorado

LOVELAND, CO (May 29, 2007) – When Eileen Maelzer’s first grandchild was born in 2004, thousands of miles away in Boston, she began searching for ways to be an “intentionally essential grandmother” from a distance.

That quest led to the start of Grandmothers Connection at LifeSpring Covenant Church. “Our agenda is to create a bibliography of good articles, books, magazines, and other resources that would support and encourage Christian grandparenting,” Maelzer says.

Grandmothers meet once a quarter to share resources, pictures and prayer requests. Up to twelve attend when the group meets in someone’s home, and more than twenty participate when the gatherings are held in a public setting, says Maelzer.

They also study issues related to grandparenting, like included respecting sons- and daughters-in-law as parents, character training, and talking to children about spiritual issues.

“The ministry is important for the health and welfare of young families who benefit from the support of grandmothers,” Maelzer says.

It also provides opportunity for the women to care for one another. “The power of prayer with other believers multiplies the cares and divides the burdens,” Maelzer says.

The meetings can be an outreach, as well. “We have some who are not active in a church, and this is their church community opportunity,” Maelzer says.
