Pentecost Forums Allow Churches to Question Candidates

CHICAGO, IL (June 1, 2007) – Upcoming televised forums featuring presidential candidates offer an opportunity for churches to ask questions about faith, poverty, and politics, says Glenn Palmberg, president of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

CNN will broadcast the first forum at 7 p.m. EDT Monday from Pentecost 2007 in Washington D.C. The event is sponsored by Sojourners/Call to Renewal—Palmberg serves on the group’s board of directors. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards are scheduled to participate.

“The goal of ‘Pentecost 2007: Taking Vision to the Streets’ is to call individuals, churches, and most importantly, our political leaders to commit to putting poverty at the top of our national agenda,” states the event's website. “We believe that the conversation about moral values in America has been widening and deepening, building into a movement for real change.”

A similar forum for top Republican candidates has been scheduled for September in Iowa. More information on that event will be published as it becomes available.

Church members are encouraged to gather for “watch parties,” at which they can discuss questions before and after the forum. Questions to consider before the event could include, “What question would you ask the candidates?” or “What important subjects regarding faith are being addressed or not addressed on the campaign trail?”

Following the event, participants may want to ask questions such as “What did you hear tonight that most impressed or troubled you?” or “What one specific proposal did you hear that you liked and one that you disliked?”
