Wisconsin Woman Honored for 62 Years of Service

SHEBOYGAN, WI (June 12, 2007) – Zion Covenant Church recently honored 82-year-old Gene Ubbelohde for her 62 years of service.

Ubbelohde taught three generations of families at the church on Wednesday afternoons and in Sunday school. She further indulged her love of teaching by leading Vacation Bible School. She also played hand bells and served on many church committees.

Ubbelohde wanted to be a teacher in the public schools, but WWII was raging when she graduated from high school. Like many women, Ubbelohde immediately took a job rather than attend college because so many men were serving in the military, and women were being asked to work.

More than 100 people attended the May 20th reception following the worship service. One former student traveled from Indiana.

Although Ubbelohde no longer teaches, she still serves on the board of Rainbow Kids, a peer support group for children and adults who are grieving a loss due to a death, divorce, separation or abandonment.

To learn more about her life, see a feature article in the Sheboygan Press.

Zion Covenant Church will be welcomed into Evangelical Covenant Church membership later this month during the 122nd Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon.
