ACC Celebrates Opening of New Conference Center

SOLDOTNA, AK (June 15, 2007) – Alaska Christian College recently celebrated the grand opening of the Peninsula Conference Center (PCC), a 4,000-square-foot, multi-purpose Kitchenfacility that includes a dining area, meeting rooms and a large commercial kitchen that can serve up to 1,000 people.

“The PCC provides enlarged space for our student body to dine together,” says Keith Hamilton, the college’s president. “We are moving from a two-car garage to the PCC. It is also our largest meeting space now on campus where we can have large events that we were previously unable to do before.” The main room will seat 250 for conferences or 150 for dining.

The center also will enable the school to better fund itself while expanding educational opportunities. Off-campus groups can rent the space for special events. “We will be hiring our own students to serve at the center and they will learn hospitality, convention services, food services management, and be able to assist in paying for their tuition at ACC,” Hamilton says. “We also may begin a separate track for students who wish to earn a certificate in food service following their first year at ACC to give them a skill that is marketable when they leave the school.”

Dining roomNearly 30 volunteer work teams from northern Maine to California, almost all from Covenant Churches, spent the last three years constructing the building. The basement dormitory is not done yet and there is a crucial need to have finish sheetrock workers here towards the middle to end of July, Hamilton says.

A dedication service was held on May 11, the weekend of commencement. Jim Ramsey of Arvada, Colorado, cut the ribbon. The electrician has spent five summers volunteering at the school. The ceremony was followed with a feast in the dining hall. Fred Savok, pastor and author of Jesus and the Eskimo gave the commencement address.

Work teams still are needed for this year and next summer. Those interested in helping should contact Eric Johnson.
