Whitehall (MI) Church Celebrates 125 Years of Ministry

WHITEHALL, MI (July 2, 2007) – Swedish immigrants founded the Evangelical Covenant Church of Whitehall during the region’s “saw mill” era in 1882. Beginning this month, the church will celebrate its 125th anniversary.

A “Community Fun Fair” will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11. The free event will include food, a live band, a petting zoo – including a camel – games, kids activities and a historical display.

The church was formally organized in July 1882 as the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Mission Association with a charter membership of 12 individuals. The church moved from its original location in 1970.

The congregation, with an attendance of more than 270, continues to reach out to its community with ministries that include an alternative worship experience for young adults on Sunday evenings. This fall, members will create models of how they think the church will look and function in 25 years.

The church will continue its anniversary celebration through the year. A historical keepsake booklet will be unveiled at a formal dinner October 19 at the Michilinda Beach Lodge.

For more information, call 231-894-4271 or visit the church website.
